Solaris Yachts and Sunrise history

I own Sunrise No 9 built in Wilments Shipyard in 1989 and have lived on it since launch in 1990.From 1991 I worked for Malcolm and Glenda Taylor as a personal assistant and also sourced parts/materials for the boats as well as doing demonstrations and boat shows (our boat was the 1990 Southampton show boat and in 1994 was a show boat at a multihull show). I know a lot about the company and the history/background of most of the Sunrises built by Solaris while they were in business. I also know quite a bit about the parts used on the boats. My partner worked as a yacht fitter/boatbuilder for Solaris
We have done osmosis treatment and are now doing a total interior refit.
It is good to see a site dedicated to Sunrises - obviously we like them, despite their rather stately sailing performance(But get it in a November gale on the west coast of Ireland and you realise how safe they are: 40 miles in 5 hours, fully laden as liveaboard!!)

Hi Jane,
We have owned Jadzia since June 2006. We bought her from, according to our bill of sale, the original owner. On checking a bit deeper we believe she was moulded in the late 90's but not completed until 2001, by the couple we bought her from and a shipwright in Bembridge I.O.W.
Although we do not live on board we spend a lot of time on Jadzia, and when we retire we intend to cruise through the European inland waterways to the Med on her.
Do you know how many Sunrises were moulded by Solaris Yachts? It would be interesting to find out how many of us there are around the world.
Fair winds.
Nigel.

I look forward to hearing more about the history and your life onboard, Jane. Certainly sounds like you should know the Sunrise inside out.
Catkin has also just had full Osmosis treatment last year. The interior is holding up well (although see my problems on the other thread).

Jadzia I believe is to do with Star Trek.
It was the last boat that Solaris Catamarans Ltd moulded back in 1999/2000. It was our eighth Solaris.
(six Sunrises and two Sunstars).
It was moulded for an American friend of mine Patrick Williams. He was to fit her out and take her back to the States. However this never came about and the boat was sold as a bonded hull and deck and was indeed floated off and completed in the Isle of Wight.
I saw Jadzia a year or so later in Alderney completed! I remember that it had a Taylors heater on the right as you enter from the cockpit (this was an idea taken from my Sunrise White Fin) and it looked and worked very well.

Hi Roger,
As you say, the name Jadzia comes from Star Trek Deep Space Nine. The couple we bought Jadzia (the Sunrise) from named her after the Star Trek character, who had a dual persona (Lt. Commander Jadzia Dax). So, 2 hulls and 2 characters!
She is indeed the boat you describe and she still has the heater you mention, and very efficient it is too during our winter weekends on board.
Having looked at other Sunrise's there does seem to be a variation in layouts. We bought Jadzia through a multihull broker who also had Meerkat for sale at the same time, but we did not like her layout as she had the heads/shower area between the workshop and the port double cabin. We have an original brochure on board, transferred to us with our purchase, and Meerkat features in this brochure.
Regards.
